Grammy grand winner DJ Black Coffee realised his dream of not only playing at Madison Square Garden but filling the New York City venue.
Congratulatory messages have been streaming throughout the
weekend since his show began. He took to New York's world well known stage
on October 7, becoming the first South Africa DJ to headline at the venue.
President Cyril Ramaphosa connected in the celebrations by
releasing a statement on his X timeline: “Congratulations to Black Coffee
for being the first South African DJ to perform at Madison Square Garden in New
York City, US, to a sold-out show this past Saturday. South African artists
continue to distinguish themselves and promote our talents on the global stage.
We thank you for flying the national flag.”

Sports, arts, and culture minister Zizi Kodwa also shared out the proud moment.
“Over the past weekend we saw the best of South African
arts and sport. We are proud of our history-makers, record-breakers, and
entertainers. Continue raising our flag sky high,” he wrote.
After his show, TshisaLIVE caught up with celebs who were
at Black Coffee's send-off, including Metro FM breakfast host DJ Sabby.
“I genuinely feel like we are living in a time that will
define a moment in an era. Because we are watching some of these amazing humans
create history in our lifetime. With Black Coffee's success, we saw him build
and really innovate, find his feet, and even create a lane for him to play and
be the superstar he is. It's a moment that reaffirms our dreams,” said DJ
Sabby.
Black Coffee’s real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo, hails from
Durban. He has become one of Mzansi's utmost celebrated DJs, and his impact has
grown to playing for crowds in Ibiza and being allied with renowned stars
including Drake, Alicia Keys, P Diddy, and many others.
Social media sensation Carpo said Black Coffee's story was
testament to faith and consistency which many young people from privileged
backgrounds could look up to.
“I feel inspired, and he made me believe anything is
possible in life. What he is doing is amazing. For the kids in the hood, I want
them to believe that and understand everything is possible with prayer and
belief. I'm a big believer and I pray a lot. I've seen miracles happen to
someone I'm close to. I saw what faith and God can do. Keep dreaming, keep
believing.”
Olwethu “Ms Party” Mlotshwa, who is known as DJ Olwee, said
Black Coffee's success had helped her and other DJs get more
opportunities.
“When Black Coffee does things like going to Madison Square
Garden, it's great for someone like me. Being a dance music DJ opens doors for
us to do more adventurous things.
“It shows people we can do things far beyond just being
behind the desk. DJing is becoming extremely competitive, and you must compete
at a very high level. We have a lot of ideas and sponsors tend not to believe
in us. It builds a bigger conversation in terms of the people who want to
support us as DJs.”
